Racing pigeons are endurance athletes. Their ability to train, recover and race consistently depends on far more than simply providing a bowl of grain.
The strongest feeding programs are built on four fundamentals:
Supplements can help in specific situations, but they cannot compensate for poor-quality feed, dirty drinkers, excessive feeding or undiagnosed disease.
Pigeons use different nutrients for different purposes.
Carbohydrates provide readily available energy for exercise and shorter, faster flights. Common sources include maize, wheat, sorghum, millet and rice.
Fat provides concentrated energy and becomes increasingly important during sustained endurance work. Oilseeds such as safflower, hemp and linseed can increase the energy density of a racing ration. However, excessive fat can make birds heavy and displace other essential nutrients.
Protein supplies the amino acids required for muscle recovery, growth, breeding and feather production. Peas and other legumes are commonly used to increase the protein content of pigeon mixtures.
Vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients support normal metabolism, skeletal strength, feather quality, reproduction and immune function.
The goal is not to maximise every nutrient. It is to provide the right balance for the bird’s current workload and stage of life.
Approximately 30–40 grams per adult bird per day can be used as a practical starting point. The correct amount will vary according to:
Feed should be measured rather than continually supplied in an overflowing hopper.
A well-conditioned racing pigeon should feel strongly muscled and buoyant. The keel should be easy to locate without feeling excessively sharp, and the bird should not carry heavy deposits of abdominal fat.
After returning from a race, pigeons should first have access to clean water. Appetite, droppings, breathing and general behaviour should be observed before assuming that every bird simply needs more food.
During the early part of the week, provide a familiar, balanced ration that supports recovery without making the birds heavy.
As training increases, adjust intake to maintain muscle condition and energy.
For demanding races, the energy density of the ration may be increased gradually during the final one or two days. Avoid suddenly introducing large amounts of oilseeds, oils or unfamiliar supplements immediately before basketing.
Clean water is one of the most important parts of a racing pigeon program.
Drinkers should be washed daily, including the removal of the slippery microbial film that can develop on the internal surfaces. Drinkers should also be positioned where droppings cannot contaminate the water.
Plain, fresh water should remain the everyday standard.
A pigeon-labelled electrolyte may be useful after:
Electrolytes should be mixed exactly according to the product directions. A stronger mixture is not necessarily more effective and may reduce water intake.
After the short recovery period, replace the electrolyte solution with fresh plain water and wash the drinker thoroughly.
Multivitamins are most useful when pigeons are eating a predominantly unfortified grain ration, have temporarily reduced food intake or have a veterinarian-confirmed nutritional concern.
If a nutritionally fortified or complete feed already supplies vitamins and minerals, routinely adding several additional fortified products may create unnecessary duplication.
Particular care is needed with fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K because they can accumulate in the body. Excessive vitamin D, for example, can contribute to abnormal mineral accumulation and kidney damage.
Avoid combining a multivitamin, mineral tonic, fortified electrolyte and complete feed on the same day unless the complete program has been professionally reviewed.
Mineral supplementation may be particularly relevant for grain-fed pigeons, growing youngsters and breeding hens.
Calcium must be considered together with phosphorus and vitamin D. Adding large quantities of calcium without considering the balance of the total diet is not a complete solution.
Additional protein or amino-acid products may be considered during growth, breeding, recovery or the moult—but only when the base ration is not already meeting the bird’s requirements.
More protein does not automatically produce more muscle or better performance.
Probiotics are intended to support a balanced intestinal microbial population and normal digestion.
Green Valley Grains includes IAH ProN8ure in its Pigeon Mix and High Flyer Mix. Because the probiotic is already incorporated into these feeds, pigeon owners should review the full ration before automatically adding another probiotic product.
A probiotic is nutritional support. It is not a treatment for canker, coccidiosis, salmonellosis, rotavirus, pigeon paramyxovirus or avian influenza.
Daily observation remains one of the best health-management tools.

These signs can be caused by several different diseases. Avoid treating every case with routine antibiotics, wormers or canker medications without obtaining a diagnosis.
Pigeons are generally considered more resistant to avian influenza than poultry, but infection is still possible and may be fatal.
Pigeons may also transport contaminated material on their feet, feathers, baskets or equipment.
Protect the loft by:
Do not touch sick or dead wild birds.
If several pigeons become ill, develop neurological signs or die unexpectedly, stop bird movements and contact a veterinarian. Suspected avian influenza should be reported to Australia’s Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
A sound racing pigeon program does not require a different tonic every day.
Begin with measured, high-quality feed, clean water, appropriate exercise, correct body condition and strict biosecurity. Use electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and probiotics only when they have a clear nutritional purpose.
That approach supports both performance and the long-term health of the loft.
